System types
Choosing the right arrangement
Most projects use one of three arrangements, sometimes in combination across a larger property.
Single split systems
One indoor unit connected to one outdoor unit. Suitable for an individual room, and the simplest system to install and maintain.
Multi split systems
Multiple indoor units connected to one outdoor unit. Useful where several rooms need independent temperature control and the number of outdoor units needs to be kept to a minimum.
Ducted systems
Concealed indoor equipment supplying conditioned air through discreet grilles. A premium approach where visible indoor units are not acceptable.
Heating as well as cooling
Suitable modern systems are reversible air-to-air heat pumps. The same equipment that removes heat from a room in summer can move heat into it in cooler weather, which makes air conditioning a practical source of background or supplementary heating for spaces such as garden rooms, loft conversions and home offices.
Whether a system is the right heating choice for a particular room depends on the building, the existing heating and how the space is used. We will tell you where it makes sense and where it does not.
System design
Sizing a system by floor area alone tends to produce equipment that is either undersized on the hottest days or oversized and short-cycling for the rest of the year. A proper assessment considers heat gain, glazing area and orientation, insulation and construction, occupancy, internal equipment loads, ventilation and the noise limits that apply indoors and at the boundary.
Pipe routes, condensate drainage, electrical supply and outdoor unit positioning are settled at design stage too, so installation day holds no surprises.
